Elevarbeid: «Historical figures» av 4.-6. trinn

Neil Armstrong

This essay is about Neil Armstrong. If you don’t know him he is the first man who landed on the moon. I’m going to be writing some history and facts about him. First I will talk about his family. Then I will tell you about his education becoming an astronaut. And finally I will look into Apollo 11, his space travel to the moon in 1969. I wanted to write about him because I myself can learn some interesting things about Neil Armstrong.

Family

Neil Armstrong met a student at the university and they fell in love and got married in 1956. They had 3 kids: Eric, Karen and Mark. When Karen was only 2 she fell and hit her head and her parents thought she had a concussion, but she had a tumor in her head. The doctors tried everything they could do to save her but she didn’t make it.

Education

Armstrong always wanted to fly, and when he was 16 he got his first pilot license. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Navy and started studying aeronautical engineering. When he was 19 he started a two year training to become a navy pilot, and was sent to the war in Korea when the training was finished. After the war he continued studies at the university to become a test pilot. When the Space Race between the USA and the Soviet Union began Armstrong went to work for NASA, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, to become an astronaut.

Apollo 11

In 1967 Neil Armstrong was tasked to lead Apollo 11 mission, the voyage to the moon itself. He brought two other astronauts with him, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. On 16th July 1969 the Apollo 11 mission took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 4 days later they reached their destination and landed safely on the moon. After the landing Armstrong was first to go outside and when he first set foot on the moon he said the famous words “That is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. After a sixty hour return travel the three astronauts landed safely in the Pacific Ocean. After Apollo 11 Armstrong never went into space again. In 1971 he left NASA to become a professor at a university. In 2012 he died at the age of 82.

Conclusion

I found the Armstrong story very fascinating and interesting. There was a lot of history and facts. I learned a lot of new things that I did not know about but when I found this story I have always wondered how it must have been on the moon and being the first man on the moon. I recommend you read about Neil Armstrong. Thank you for reading my essay, I hope you enjoyed it.

Florence Nightingale

In this text I am going to talk about Florence Nightingale. I have never heard about her before but when I heard her name it sounded like a interesting person. She became famous because of the fact that she went to the Crimea and worked to help hurt and sick soldiers. The three points I am going to talk about is when she was born and when she was young, what she did when she got older and when she died. First I am going to talk about 1820 – 1837.

1820+ 1837: In 1820, Florence was born in Florence in Italy. Florence was French and Italian.(I think she was named after where she was born). When she grew up, young girls were not allowed to choose what they wanted to be when they grew up or that they were not at all allowed to get a job. She grew up in a rich family. Florence wanted to help people that was hurt.  In 1837 she dreamt that God told her she had a great mission in her life. Next—> I am going to talk about 1860.

1851: In 1851 she studied to become a nurse in Germany. And in 1853 she started working at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London.  She worked during the war between the Osmanian Empire and Russian Empire in 1853. She became famous because of the fact that she went to the Crimea and worked to help hurt and sick soldiers. Crimea was a part of Russia, and is located by the black sea. The name of the war was the Crimean war. The Russians wanted access to the Mediterranean Sea. The Osmanians where supported by France and Great Britain.

1860: At 1860 she opened the Nightingale Training School at St. Thomas’ Hospital, because in 1853 she started working at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London. And in 1910 she died. Today is it some movies and Books about her. She is now remembered as The Lady with the lamp. She  was remembered as ‘The Lady with the lamp’ because she making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.

In this text I was writing about when Florence Nightingale was born, when she studied to become a nurse and when she opened a training school. And I have learned that she was a really helpful person and was really nice because she did think about other people and not just about herself. I write this because I think it’s important to know about history people.

Amelia Earhart

In this text i will tell you about Amelia Earhart. She was a brave person. She was the first woman to fly on her own across the Atlantic Ocean. I’m going to tell you about her life journey, when she flew across the Atlantic Ocean and her flying across the whole world. I chose to write about her because I haven’t heard much about her and I want to learn more.

Her life is very exciting. She was born in Kansas Missouri in USA  in 1897. Her parents were Samuel Stanton Earhart and Amelia Otis Earhart. When she was 19 she went to college (Columbia University) . She worked for the Red Cross before she became a pilot. When she was 24 she decided that flying was her passion. She began taking flying lessons. She also bought her first airplane. In 1931 she got married to George Palmer Putnam.

When she was 31 she became the first woman to be a passenger that crosses the Atlantic Ocean. This happened because she got a phone call that she was invited to be the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean. She was very excited because at that time it wasn’t normal for women to be involved in airplanes. The trip across the Atlantic Ocean took 14 hours and 56 minutes. Four years later she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932).

After she flew twice across the Atlantic Ocean she wanted to fly around the world. So in 1937 she decided to fly around the world. The journey started off good, but over halfway through the flight her plane disappeared on the radar. The plane disappeared near Hawaii. No one has ever found her or the plane. Since no one found her body that mean she doesn’t have a grave. Today there are several books, movies and one statue of her to remember how she was a great role model for people.

As you can tell Amelia Earhart was a brave person and she was a great role model. She showed girls that it wasn’t just men who could be good pilots. I really like her because she shows that both women and men can do the same things.
